This book is written for the politically moderate 50-70% of Americans who are demoralized by the state of our country and feel inconsequential in our politics. They are the Exhausted Majority, a term coined by the Hidden Tribes research project.

Its aim is to convince readers—especially voters aged 18-40—that they have potentially sweeping political power and will experience better mental health if they become more civically engaged and join with others in improving community and national life.

The book names three dark, intertwining forces that jeopardize our country and create a spiritual and mental health crisis characterized by isolation, anxiety, and high rates of suicide.

The worst problem is the historic decline of civic engagement causing citizens to drift into passivity. Another problem is political: A menacing minority on the extreme right that is intent on degrading our liberty. The third, is oligarchy, the economic system in which a very small number of extremely wealthy people control the political, economic, and the media life of our nation.

Ordinary citizens can help our country deal with all of these problems and help themselves as they do so. While there is an urgent need for activism, one does not have to become a political operative to make a difference; one only has to show up as a citizen rather than a consumer, as a neighbor rather than a stranger—by voting regularly, engaging with neighbors, and joining the civic life of their community. Politicians can enact laws and make policy but only We the People can get them to do so.
